The Property Tax Accountability Network

The mission of the Property Tax Accountability Network (PTAN) is to increase awareness of public initiatives that will increase property tax in the Madison County, Idaho area with the end goal of increasing voter response. This would include school bonds and levies as well as recreation districts.

Who is most hurt by increased property tax because of public initiatives?

People on a fixed income.  Inflation is on the rise, which increases the cost of fuel and food. When you are on a fixed income, like social security or a pension fund, property tax increases are a huge burden.  Many of our older population are already having to decide between paying their soaring medication prices or for their food.  Do we need to further burden them with higher property taxes?

Those who rent their home or their business space.  Because of the homeowner exemption, school bonds, levies and recreation district taxes affect the homeowner less than a renter. Housing owners must transfer all property tax increases to rent prices.

Small farmers.  Property tax is a heavy burden for small farmers, who don’t have the diversification on their farms to help pay the higher cost.

Increasing our debt:

We are living in economically unsure times.  If there is an economic downturn, the debt is still there and must be paid.

We, the taxpayers, will be responsible for that debt.  If this bond passes, we are committing ourselves for the next 20 years.
